OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is partnering with local community organizations to host a gun buyback event on April 18, 2026.
Officials stated the event is scheduled to take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Thy Word Ministries, located at 8915 International Blvd.

According to promotional materials, the initiative allows individuals to surrender firearms with “no questions asked.”
Participants who turn in firearms are eligible to receive a gift card valued at up to $300.
Additionally, the program includes a “Guns to Gardens” component where all collected firearms will be forged into garden tools.

The upcoming event follows a November 2025 initiative where the OPD collected 58 firearms, including four assault rifles, an AR pistol, and “ghost guns” (privately manufactured firearms).
Organizers stated that participants will also receive a garden tool as part of the exchange, continuing a tradition of transforming tools of harm into tools that cultivate community growth.
Volunteers for the event are being organized through Brady United, and donations to support the gift card funding are being accepted via the Guns to Gardens program.
