Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, announced Tuesday that he will seek election to the U.S. House of Representatives, aiming to succeed longtime Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler in New York’s 12th Congressional District.
“This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington,” Schlossberg said in a campaign video shared on social media late Tuesday.
A Democrat, Schlossberg told supporters in an email that his campaign will formally launch on Wednesday. The 12th District encompasses Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and midtown.
Schlossberg has built a significant following on social media by engaging on national issues and occasionally critiquing members of his own family, including his cousin, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Last month, he posted a Halloween-themed image mocking Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” campaign.
Rep. Nadler, who is serving his 17th term, announced in September that he would not seek reelection next year. Speaking to The New York Times, Nadler suggested that a younger Democratic lawmaker might be better positioned to serve the district.
