FLORISTON, Calif. (Next Stamina) — A 19-year-old Petaluma man who went missing while swimming in the Truckee River on March 21 was located deceased by rescue divers on March 23.

Authorities identified the individual as Brian Marcellino Gallardo.

The incident was first reported to officials at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Saturday near Floriston. Brian Gallardo was visiting the river with friends and was noted by authorities as being from out of the area.

Following the initial report, a search operation commenced that extended through Sunday and Monday.

The recovery effort involved multiple allied agencies and specialized equipment. Search teams utilized K9 units, drones, helicopters, and ground searchers on foot. Additionally, the operation included swift water rescue teams and rescue swimmers.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office divers ultimately located the body on March 23.

The NCSO characterized the incident as a “profound loss of a young man” and noted the impact on the family and community. According to officials, drownings are “especially difficult incidents, often unfolding quickly and leaving a lasting impact on families, responders, and the community.”

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the family and friends of Marcellino Gallardo following what they described as a “heartbreaking loss for his loved ones.”

Following the recovery, authorities issued a reminder for the public to exercise caution around waterways.

The WCSO stated that the “tragedy also serves as an important reminder to use extreme caution around waterways, as river conditions remain fast-moving, cold, and dangerous.”

Current river conditions are described by the NCSO as dangerous for utilization due to the speed and temperature of the water.
