A quiet southern New Jersey neighborhood turned into an active crime scene after a man fatally shot his sister before taking his own life.
Authorities identified the suspect as 60-year-old Daniel Lopez, who opened fire on his sister, Janet Camacho, on Wednesday morning.
The fatal confrontation took place on the front steps of a home located on Bethel Avenue in Pennsauken.
Emergency responders received calls reporting shots fired and an armed man at the location around 9 a.m..
When responding police officers arrived at the scene, they found Camacho lying critically injured on the front stoop.
First responders rushed Camacho to Cooper University Hospital, where medical staff declared her dead shortly after arrival.
Law enforcement officers established a perimeter around the property and escorted neighbors out of their homes.
Police deployed a robotic dog inside the house and located Lopez dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound 90 minutes after the call.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office officially classified the incident as a murder-suicide, though the motive remains under investigation.
Surveillance footage obtained by WPVI showed the shooting and a man pacing outside, but officials deemed the video too graphic to air.
Neighbor Michelle Jimenez expressed profound shock while describing Lopez as a close family friend who frequently visited her home.
Jimenez provided context regarding their personal bond before sharing memories of his kind demeanor.
“We used to invite him a lot for family parties,” Jimenez recalled.
“He would always be our guest,” she added.
“He was really close to our family,” she noted.
“He was always nice,” she continued.
“He would bake stuff for me and my siblings,” she explained.
“It was just shocking to me,” Jimenez stated.
“I didn’t believe it,” she concluded, according to NY Post.
