Emergency room nurse Yanira Eguileor reacted when she heard a female colleague in distress.
Describing moments preceding the attack, Eguileor recalled hearing a loud scream before seeing the assailant chase her toward the nursing station.
Intervening to protect her coworker, Eguileor confronted the patient and shouted, “No! Don’t hit her.”
The suspect turned toward the nurse and struck her with a closed fist.
Recounting the blow she sustained, Eguileor stated, “He punched me a total of three times,” per WSVN.
The beatdown left the veteran health care worker with head, neck, spinal, and back injuries alongside arm bruising.
Surveillance video recorded the nurse falling before other staff wrestled the suspect down.
Addressing security concerns, attorney Michael Pizzi criticized the response following the beatdown.
Condemning the lack of protection, Pizzi asserted that a career nurse was left lying semi-unconscious while the assailant ransacked the ward.
Following the incident, legal actions were initiated including a 5 million negligence lawsuit against the facility.
