The New Orleans Saints are 1-4 and have not made the playoffs since 2020. The lack of success is wearing on fans and owner Gayle Benson knows it. While addressing the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club she told an audience that the team’s performance was not acceptable. She took some of the blame, saying the responsibility starts with her, but she also specifically mentioned her head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis.
“I will not make excuses,” said Benson. “And I will not accept this level of performance as our standard.”
While Loomis was the general manager during the Sean Payton and Drew Brees era, which means he won a Super Bowl with the Saints, Moore is a second-year head coach still looking for his first real taste of success. His predecessor, Dennis Allen, was fired midway through his third year.

Gayle Benson the 1-4 start
“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform,” Benson said. “Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”
Benson closed by saying, “I expect better. Our fans deserve better. I am determined to see that we do it.”
After Sean Payton left the Saints had losing records in four of the next five seasons and are headed for five in six. Last season they lost their first four games and started 1-8. The year before they started 2-7. The Saints have the Giants, Steelers, Browns and Panthers coming up on their schedule so they’ll need to win two of those games to at least be on a better pace than they had been the last two years, but it’s far from a guarantee.
Their young quarterback is coming off a very rough week, but has shown signs of life this season. He escaped criticism from the owner at the event, but maybe its just inappropriate to speak ill of a signal caller at a quarterback club.
