Rams to cut ties with Harrison Mevis after another field goal disaster originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Buffalo Bills in Week 5, and it was thanks in large part to a massive missed opportunity in overtime, when the Rams couldn’t hit a field goal to win the game.

Harrison Mevis’ kick was blocked, further extending the Rams’ special teams problems this season, and this time, it led directly to a loss. This missed kick was apparently the last straw for the Rams.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Rams are cutting ties with Mevis after another kicking disaster and will be rolling with New York Jets and former New Orleans Saints kicker Blake Grupe moving forward.

Rams to release Harrison Mevis, replace him with Blake Grupe

“A kicker change for the Rams: They’re releasing Harrison Mevis and signing Blake Grupe off the Jets’ practice squad, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Garafolo reports. “A move at the position after last night’s overtime blocked field goal.”

The Rams are moving on from Mevis one day after his game-winning field goal was blocked against the Bills on Monday Night Football in overtime.

While not solely his fault, Mevis is still partially to blame for his kick being blocked. Add in that it looked as if his kick might’ve missed anyway, and the Rams had reason to move on from Mevis following Week 5.

This season, Mevis is 5-of-9 on field goals, a brutal 55.6 percentage, with a long of only 48 yards. His release makes a lot of sense based on his 2026 play.

Despite having a successful 2025 season with the team, hitting all six of his playoff field goals and 12-13 in the regular season, along with being perfect on extra-point attempts, his struggles this season are too much to ignore.

Los Angeles will now turn to Grupe, hoping the former Saints and Indianapolis Colts kicker can avoid the same costly mistakes Mevis made this season.

Grupe, in his NFL career, has an 81.9 field goal percentage, including hitting all 11 of his field goals with the Colts last season in five games played. He’s also the active leader in extra-point percentage at 98 percent.

Mevis is out, and Grupe is in. The Rams have made a kicking change after another disaster special teams moment from this team and another poor performance from Mevis this season.
