Gayle Benson is not happy with her football team after the first chunk of the season.
The New Orleans Saints owner called out her team and was understandably frustrated after their 1-4 start to the year while speaking at a local luncheon on Tuesday.
“That is not acceptable to me,” Benson said, via NOLA.com’s Rod Walker. “And it falls short of what our fans truly deserve. I hear the frustration directed towards our team and our organization. It is not lost on me. Our fans invest their time and their hearts in the Saints. They are right to expect more than we have delivered.”
The Saints have lost three straight, all three of which were at home, including a 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. That contest was rough all around for New Orleans, too. Quarterback Tyler Shough threw two interceptions and managed just 96 passing yards, and the Saints only put up 55 rushing yards as a team.

Their only win was a 24-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2.
Benson even called out her head coach and general manager directly on Tuesday, too. Kellen Moore is in just his second season as the Saints head coach, which marks his first head coaching job in the league. Micky Loomis has been the Saints’ general manager since 2002. He oversaw their Super Bowl-winning team during the 2009 campaign, and is the only general manager that Benson has known. She took over as the team’s owner after her husband, Thomas Benson, died in 2018.
“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform,” Benson said. “Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. The players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”
It’s not clear if Benson’s comments will lead to any significant organizational changes in the near future or not. The Saints have missed the playoffs for five straight seasons, and went just 6-11 last season after hiring Moore. They’ve struggled to find any sort of offensive consistency, or even mount a winning record, since longtime quarterback Drew Brees retired after the 2020 campaign.
Undoubtedly, the prolonged struggles are starting to take its toll. If things don’t turn around quickly — the Saints will take on the New York Giants next on Sunday before returning home for another three-game homestand — calls for meaningful changes around the organization are only going to get louder.
