Ole Miss secured a victory over former head coach Lane Kiffin as the Rebels defeated LSU 32-24 in Oxford.
The anticipated matchup followed ten months of drama after Kiffin departed Ole Miss to take the head coaching position at LSU.
Kiffin left Oxford despite leading a playoff-bound team because he questioned whether he could win a title at Ole Miss.
The departure created animosity among fans who felt abandoned during a postseason run.
A record crowd filled Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to witness the emotional reunion.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss delivered a stellar performance to lead the Rebels attack.
Chambliss finished with 363 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Addressing media regarding national perception of the program, the quarterback shared his perspective.
“The whole nation kind of disrespects Ole Miss,” Chambliss said.
“When they compare LSU and Ole Miss, they always say LSU has more money,” Chambliss stated per CBS Sports.
Kiffin struggled to process his emotions while returning to the sideline where he spent six seasons.
Reflecting on his emotional state following the loss, the visiting coach acknowledged the difficulty of the evening.
“There’s a lot of stuff six years here,” Kiffin said.
“I know that sometimes I don’t act like it, but I’m a human too,” Kiffin added.
Head coach Pete Golding improved his record to 5-1 since taking over the program.
Golding has now earned four victories over ranked opponents during his early tenure.
Downplaying any narrative regarding personal revenge against his predecessor, the head coach emphasized focus.
“It wasn’t our Super Bowl, and we didn’t make it out to be our Super Bowl,” Golding said.
With the victory, Ole Miss improved to 3-0 while Kiffin fell to 13-25 against ranked opponents in his career.
The Rebels now turn their attention to an upcoming matchup against Florida as they continue their regular season.
