Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment are partnering to release a new film adaptation of the classic video game franchise.
The action-packed theatrical release is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Oct. 16, 2026, marking nearly 40 years since the original arcade video game debuted in August 1987.
The live-action production was filmed specifically for IMAX theaters to enhance the scale of the classic fight sequences.
The upcoming film is directed by Kitao Sakurai, who previously directed episodes of the video-game-based television series “Twisted Metal”.
The cinematic storyline takes place in the 1990s, specifically focusing on the year 1993.
In the film, Ryu and Ken Masters are depicted as “estranged Street Fighters” who must reunite for a major martial arts competition.
The official plot description details how the “estranged Street Fighters” are “thrown back into combat” when they are recruited by the mysterious Chun-Li for the next World Warrior Tournament, described as “a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury,” according to Deadline and People magazine.
This competitive reunion exposes a “deadly conspiracy” lurking in the tournament’s shadows, which “forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past,” the outlets reported.
If the former friends fail to overcome their conflicts, the synopsis warns that “it’s GAME OVER!” per the local outlets.
The promotional trailer features a flamboyant tournament announcer who introduces the combatants to a cheering audience.
“I’ve got good news, y’all. Gathered here are the world’s best fighters! But only one of which will be crowned the world champion of Street Fighter!” the master of ceremonies proclaims in the footage, the outlets reported.
