U.S. government officials have restricted travel for American employees in the Mexican border city of Nogales, Sonora.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a warning Saturday limiting activity due to an unspecified threat.
Explaining the safety measures, the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales released a statement detailing the travel limits.
“Due to threat information, US government activities in, and travel to, Nogales have been restricted to essential movement during daylight hours only,” the consulate stated.
Consulate officials added a warning, “We are alerting US citizens of this threat and change in posture.”
The Sonora State Security Board contacted American officials but could not identify any specific danger.
Mexican state authorities declared they had no information establishing a concrete risk to the public.
Mexican local security agencies in Sonora promised to continue their preventive security operations throughout the border city.
The security warning reminded Americans that Sonora is designated as a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” region.
Urging caution on social media, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., advised the public to heed the instructions.
“For Americans in or near Nogales – or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the US government,” Biggs wrote.
