An investigation is underway after an altercation inside the booking area of the Pittsburg Police Department led to a shooting on Thursday afternoon.
The independent city of Pittsburg is located in Contra Costa County, which is approximately 40 miles northeast of San Francisco.
A 31-year-old male suspect was arrested and transported to the police headquarters for routine booking procedures.
While inside the booking facility, a physical struggle erupted between the suspect and a police officer.
During the violent altercation, a firearm was discharged, striking both individuals, per ABC7 San Francisco and KCRA.
Both the officer and the suspect were injured in the gunfire and subsequently hospitalized.
The officer was listed in serious but stable condition, while the suspect is in stable condition, according to the local outlets.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a joint investigation with the local police department.
Expressing deep grief and anger over the violence against law enforcement, Contra Costa County Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston released a public statement.
“I am heartbroken and outraged to learn that one of our Pittsburg police officers has been shot this afternoon,” according to ABC7 San Francisco.
Praising the quick response of emergency personnel and mutual aid agencies, Pittsburg Police Chief Phil Galer issued a statement of gratitude.
“Our officers acted heroically today,” per KCRA.
The chief also shared the collective hope of the community for a complete recovery of the wounded officer.
“I know I’m joined by the residents of Pittsburg in hoping for a full recovery of our officer,” reported the outlets.
