The Baltimore Ravens learned from the failed March Maxx Crosby trade as they prepared a deal this week to acquire center Cam Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in order to speed up the process to finalize the trade, the Ravens and Eagles set up a physical for Jurgens in Philadelphia before consummating the deal. A pair of Ravens doctors traveled to the Eagles’ training facility on Wednesday morning and gave Jurgens his physical exam. Once he was found to be fit, the trade was finalized and announced.
The process was different from seven months ago when it was reported that the Ravens were acquiring Crosby, a five-time Pro Bowler, from the Las Vegas Raiders pending a physical.

Four days after the news broke, the Raiders announced that the Ravens had backed out of the trade agreement, which was later reported due to Crosby, who played last season with a left knee injury and needed offseason surgery to repair the meniscus in the knee, failing his physical.
The Jurgens trade, which saw the Ravens send the Eagles a pair of future draft picks in exchange for the 27-year-old and a 2027th seventh-rounder, was not contingent on a physical being passed since the exam had already taken place. Usually players travel to their potential new team in order to be checked out before a trade is made official.
After the Crosby deal fell through, the Ravens pivoted and signed Trey Hendrickson to a four-year, $112 million contract in free agency.
Jurgens will not make his debut this week for the Ravens as he remains in concussion protocol. He is expected to be available for Baltimore’s Week 6 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
