Finding a new identity this late into the season will be difficult for Penn State head coach Matt Campbell after slumping to a 0-2 start to their Big Ten campaign. Still, there needs to be some level of accountability to find ways to fix this offense and right now, Campbell is searching for answers. Whether it be the inconsistencies of Rocco Becht or the decision-making of offensive coorisnator Taylor Mauser, something needs to change in order for the Nittany Lions to have a chance of a rebound.
If you take a look at the game against Northwestern, you would be hard-pressed to find any positives offensively. However, it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Rocco Becht at the very least, looked slightly better at times, but could be said to have been let down by a moribund rushing attack and a porous offensive line that sped up his processing. As a result, the Nittany Lions could not move the ball efficiently enough to generate any positive momentum.
When asked about Becht’s overall performance, Campbell did not just point out his struggles, but the entire offense’s. “Rocco certainly needs to be better, and we can continue to pound away at that, and Rocco would be the first one to say it. But we need to be better with the other ten people around him too. We need to be better in our pass protection at times. We certainly need to be better in terms of our run game”, Campbell said of what needs to change.
Starting this week, against a USC defense that has continued to struggle to get off the field, Matt Campbell and Co. can focus on getting this offense back on track one step at a time. It may not look perfect, but maybe, just maybe, there will be a small chance at redemption.
