Pep Chavarria was an interesting summer addition for Chelsea. Much older than most of the signing we’ve made in recent years, he seemed to be a very direct pick of Xabi Alonso.
He’s now made his Premier League debut and is adapting to life in England, as he explained in an interview with the club website.
It seems that one person having a big impact on him is Moises Caicedo, a fellow Spanish speaker who is helping Chavarria integrate:
“Moi stays with me always, and he is now teaching me English because I need to learn,” Chavarria said.

It’s been a baptism of fire for Chavarria in English football – Alonso’s team have yet to keep a clean sheet this season. The competitive balance of the league is a big change form La Liga.
“It’s more difficult here [than in Spain] because all teams have very good players,” the left back explained.
“The last team in the table can win against the first. Because you play against top players, you need to be at your best level, because here, if you don’t stay focused, in one second you can lose the game. You need to be very concentrated all the time.”

Xabi Alonso knows that Chelsea’s big problem is their defence, and he’s been open about the need to improve things.
