RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner works towards comeback

After sustaining a thigh injury which required surgery just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner is working on his comeback.

On Tuesday, the Bundesliga side confirmed that the Austrian had indeed returned to team training, albeit partially. Still, it’s positive news for Leipzig and Baumgartner, who scored 17 goals and provided nine assists in 37 appearances across all competitions last season.

According to a report by Kicker, it’s unclear as to when Baumgartner will fully return to training, and uncertain as to when he will be available to Martin Demichelis.

Additionally, both Rocco Reitz and Brajan Gruda returned to training on Tuesday. The former suffered a muscular injury at the start of September, while Gruda was replaced after 26 minutes against Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 4 with an abdominal injury, and subsequently had to withdraw from Jürgen Klopp’s maiden Germany squad.

Demichelis’ Leipzig host Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday before welcoming PSV in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday before a trip to Bayern Munich the following week.
