Will Michigan keep starting Bryce Underwood after latest poor showing?

Kyle Whittingham has a Bryce Underwood decision to make. Heโ€™ll make it amid what he considers to be one of the hardest challenges heโ€™s faced in his long coaching career. The stakes are high or, if the results to this point are any indication, thereโ€™s not much to salvage from his first year in Ann Arbor.

The Michigan Wolverines are now 3-2 after their offense was once again stagnant in a 20-14 Saturday loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. If not for a controversial second that was added back on the clock allowing the Wolverines a chance to stun Western Michigan, Whittingham would be off to a 2-3 start during his Ann Arbor tenure. Had Oklahoma offered any type of cohesive offense at the Big House a few weeks ago, well, Whittingham can take some solace in knowing that team is what their record says they are.

And at 3-2, that record says Michigan is certainly far from formidable. Especially when it comes to putting points on the board. Underwood, a five-star recruit was was believed to be the next big offensive star, has been pedestrian. It was perhaps too early to call for a change under center before Saturdayโ€™s ugliness in Minneapolis.
Now it might be the prudent thing to explore.

โ€œWe might have to make some tough decisions here, weโ€™ll see,โ€ Whittingham said following the game. โ€œRight now, to this point, through this portion of the season, itโ€™s unacceptable. The results are unacceptable right now.โ€
โ€œEverythingโ€™s in play,โ€ he added. โ€œWhat you donโ€™t want to do is panic. We are 3-2. We have seven games to right the ship as much as we can during this bye week.โ€
Underwood was far below par against the Golden Gophers, completing just 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards. He threw two interceptions and added only 20 yards with his legs. Michigan was a complete non-factor in the second half due to turnovers or an ability to string together first downs.
Worse than all of this was the eye test. Or the gut test.
What percentage of Michigan fans truly believed Underwood had it in him to author a game-winning drive in the last minutes? It has to be a very small subset. Any chance at all disappeared when he sailed a fourth-down throw well over his receiverโ€™s head. That was an appropriate coda for the day.
Michigan enters a bye week with Penn State looming in two weeks. The Nittany Lions appear quite beatable. Underwood could probably find a way to win that one. But the week after that brings the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers. Something is going to have to change for Michigan to have a chance.
There arenโ€™t any easy answers. Yet it doesnโ€™t feel like it should be this hard for Whittingham. He appeared to be stepping into a ready-made situation with high-end talent under center. Instead heโ€™s looking for answersโ€”and pointsโ€”and the season nears the halfway mark.
