Members of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer have faced personal losses and production shifts nearly three decades after the show premiered.

Stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited at the 2026 Emmy Awards to present an award.

On stage during the broadcast, Gellar addressed the audience regarding recent tragic events affecting the cast.

Offering a message of remembrance, Gellar stated, “David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people”.

The reunion followed the deaths of three core cast members who passed away over two years.

Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, died on Feb. 26, 2025, at age 39 from diabetes complications.

In a social media tribute, Gellar quoted the season five finale, writing, “Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you”.

Reflecting on moving forward, Gellar added, “The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you”.

Co-star James Marsters praised Trachtenberg, describing her as “fiercely intelligent, howlingly funny and a very talented person”.

Actor Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died on March 20, 2026, at age 54 from cardiovascular disease.

Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles, died in 2026 at age 72 from pneumonia complications.

Announcing his passing, daughters Emily and Daisy Head stated, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head”.

Describing his final moments, they continued, “He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family”.

A proposed Hulu sequel series was also canceled in March 2026 prior to production.

Discussing the decision, Gellar revealed that the project’s sudden cancellation was a development that “nobody saw coming”.
