U.S. Representative Nancy Mace has publicly called for the execution of Lindsay Clancy following a mistrial in her murder case.
The South Carolina Republican voiced outrage on Monday regarding the Massachusetts prosecution.
Clancy stands accused of strangling her three young children in 2023.
Addressing the severity of the alleged crimes, Mace stated her stance on accountability.
“Her children are dead, she should be dead too,” Mace said.
The lawmaker argued that the legal system must impose capital punishment.
“She should get the death penalty. It should be public. It should be a public execution,” Mace said.
Commenting on execution methods, Mace expressed indifference about how it should be carried out.
“It could be by firearm, it could be electric chair, I don’t really care,” Mace said.
Elaborating on deterrence, Mace emphasized the message execution would send.
Execution would serve as a “warning to women everywhere — you don’t kill your kids,” Mace said.
The remarks followed the conclusion of Clancy’s murder trial.
The trial ended in a mistrial when jurors failed to reach a verdict.
Defense attorneys argued Clancy should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
A single holdout juror prevented a unanimous decision.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington requested a presidential pardon from Donald Trump.
Mace blasted the maneuver, calling the petition a “nasty, ugly” publicity stunt.
A presidential pardon is legally impossible because Clancy faces state charges.
Trump acknowledged the situation during a media briefing on Sunday.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump said.
Reflecting on the loss, Trump noted the lack of resolution.
“There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” Trump said.
