Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is launching his reelection campaign despite low approval ratings, betting his progressive coalition remains strong.

The mayor confirmed his plans ahead of an announcement at the DuSable Black History Museum on the South Side.

Reflecting on his record, Johnson underscored his core campaign commitments.

“I made a promise four years ago that I would work every day to build the safest, most affordable big city in America by investing in people, and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” Johnson said.

However, a recent poll places support for his bid at just 13.6 percent against challengers like Alexi Giannoulias.

Giannoulias holds a major financial advantage with nearly $22 million in campaign funds, compared to under $1 million for Johnson.

Addressing voter sentiment, Chicago Democratic Socialists of America Co-chair Sean Duffy highlighted the demand for change.

“People are tired of politicians who don’t deliver and who side with corporations over working-class people,” Duffy said.

Defending policy battles with the City Council, Johnson framed political friction as necessary for progressive goals.

“If we’re fighting over whether we should raise wages for working people or whether corporations should pay more, those are fights worth having,” Johnson said.

Reiterating his resolve, Johnson questioned holding office without pushing for change.

“If I don’t have that fight, then what’s the whole point of me being here?” Johnson asked.
