The Broncos’ game plan heading into their matchup against Roosevelt was to spread the ball around and present a balanced offensive attack.
Quarterback Wynter Smith had other ideas.
The senior carved up the Rough Riders’ defense and had a hand in all seven Broncos touchdowns – six on the ground and one through the air – as Brandeis steamed past Roosevelt 49-28 Thursday at the Dub Farris Athletic Complex.
“We tried to share the wealth in the game plan,” Brandeis coach Kemmie Lewis said. “But sometimes you’ve got to pivot. [Wynter Smith] is just one of those kids. He’s dynamic. He’s electric. He understands how to get out and move the ball. It’s just what he does.

“He’s been here for three years now. We’re just fortunate to have him.”
The Broncos wasted no time establishing the ground game, riding a trio of rushes from junior Bryce Potter into the Rough Riders’ red zone. Smith called his own number on a read option and stiff-armed a would-be tackler en route to a 12-yard rushing touchdown.
Brandeis junior Ah’maury Hamilton picked off Roosevelt quarterback Xavion Chambers on the ensuing Rough Riders’ possession, setting up a quick Brandeis score. Smith, working off of play action, evaded a sack and finished the play with his legs, scoring from 23 yards out to put the Broncos up 14-0 with 8:23 left in the first quarter.
“We’ve been repping this all week, every week,” Smith said. “We finally came out and showed that it paid off, and we executed.”
On the first play of the second quarter, Smith walked in a 2-yard touchdown, giving Brandeis a 21-0 lead.
Roosevelt got its first breakthrough after a 39-yard connection from Chambers to senior Dreidan Rose. The chunk play set up a 4-yard score from junior Ernest Smith with 8:00 left in the half.
Wynter Smith punched in his fourth score of the half on the ground with 1:56 remaining, capping off a 13-play drive. Chambers orchestrated a two-minute drill to get the Rough Riders on the board again before half, connecting with sophomore Avery Barlowe for a 16-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 28-13.

Coming out of the half, Brandeis kept riding Wynter Smith as the team pulled ahead 35-13 off his fifth rushing score of the night.
“When you’ve got Wynter Smith on your team, you’ve got a chance to win,” Lewis said. “He makes everything go. He’s the captain of our offense, team and another coach on the field.”
After another Chambers interception, Brandeis looked to put Roosevelt to bed. But the Rough Riders bowed up and forced a turnover on downs. Roosevelt regained possession, and Chambers quickly strolled in for a 6-yard score. A successful 2-point conversion put the Rough Riders down 35-21 with 1:52 left in the third.
Both sides exchanged scores late in the fourth, but Wynter Smith sealed the win through the air as he connected with senior Grayson Hallmark for a 6-yard touchdown.
“It’s just momentum,” Wynter Smith said of the win. “We still got three more games to go. We’re just going to have to put our head down, keep working and take it one game at a time.”
