The Eagles said a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night revealed movement in Jalen Hurts’ superficial blood clot, prompting the team to rule him out of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. In a statement Thursday, Philadelphia outlined when doctors discovered the condition and why they cleared Hurts to play against Jacksonville in London before the latest scan changed his availability.
The timeline began Oct. 8, when Hurts requested treatment for his calf after practice. He told the medical staff he had been cleated during the Oct. 4 game against the Rams. The Eagles said it was his first treatment session for the injury after practicing fully on Wednesday and Thursday. He received treatment again Friday, practiced fully, and was added to the injury report. An ultrasound performed Saturday after the team’s flight to London and walkthrough revealed a superficial blood clot. According to the Eagles, their medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and determined that Hurts could safely play, with activity and mobility considered important.
Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia, the team said.

The Eagles said Hurts played without limitation Sunday, received treatment Monday and Tuesday, and practiced fully on Wednesday. The team also said it remained in communication with the league office throughout its time in London and this week.
Wednesday night’s follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small clot.
“Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment,” the Eagles said. “His health and safety are our highest priority.”
The statement did not provide a return timetable beyond Sunday’s game or specify the treatment Hurts will receive.
His absence puts Tanner McKee in line to lead Philadelphia’s offense against Carolina as the 2-3 Eagles try to end a three-game losing streak.
