Well, would you look at that. The Kansas City Chiefs are back on top of the NFL. After a dismal 2025 campaign that saw them completely miss the postseason, it’s looking like this team is back to its previous form. Through five weeks, the Chiefs are 4-0 and are well-rested coming out of their bye week.

That being said, all is not well in Kansas City. The Chiefs have a glaring problem staring them in the face: their wide receiver room. Their wide receivers have been playing well as of late, but they lost one of their key receivers, Tyquan Thornton, due to injury. Rashee Rice is also struggling with injuries, suffering a hamstring injury in Week 4 that may linger through the year.

Past Thornton, Rice, and Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs’ wide receiver room looks thin. Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen are training camp standouts who performed well in preseason, but their ability to perform against true starters remains to be seen. Travis Kelce is having a resurgence, but he’s also 35 and is best used as a release valve now. Kansas City badly needs more wide receiver help to complement their potent rushing attack.

With that in mind, the Chiefs should take inspiration from the Houston Texans and take on a reclamation project at wide receiver.

Chiefs’ perfect Brian Thomas Jr. trade offer to Jaguars

Chiefs get: WR Brian Thomas Jr.

Jaguars get: 2nd-round pick

The Texans made a splash play earlier this week by trading for former Arizona Cardinals first-round pick Marvin Harrison Jr. Selected fourth overall by Arizona a few years ago, Harrison has struggled for most of his career in the NFL. He had 885 receiving yards on 62 catches with eight touchdowns in his rookie year, and it’s only been downhill from there. This season, Harrison Jr.’s targets dwindled over the course of the year.

Thomas Jr. is following a similar trajectory right now with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former LSU wide receiver had a better rookie year (87 catches for 1,282 yards and ten touchdowns), but his career has cratered since then. His 2025 campaign was up-and-down, catching just 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns. His catch rate went down to just around 52%, and his drop rate spiked to 11%.

This season, Thomas is struggling to get off the ground. He has just 105 yards in five weeks, and he’s been thoroughly outpaced by Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, and even tight end Brenton Strange to an extent.

The Jaguars haven’t shown any interest in trading Thomas Jr. Yet, the Chiefs should still try to inquire to see what they need to give up for the former first-round pick. Kansas City still needs a lot of help at the wide receiver position. As mentioned, they have lost one player indefinitely (Thornton), while another player is dealing with lingering hamstring issues (Rice). Their ground game is good, yes, but they need to be able to threaten the other team in the passing game for the run to truly work.

Thomas Jr. is no Worthy or Thornton when it comes to speed, but he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine. The Chiefs highly value speedy wide receivers, as it allows them to stretch the defense for Kenneth Walker to wreak havoc in the box. Thomas Jr would fit in nicely with Kansas City’s scheme. The real question, though, is the price the Jaguars will set for their wide receiver.

The Jaguars’ unwillingness to trade Thomas Jr. and the Harrison Jr. deal complicates the mathematics for the Chiefs. The Jags’ asking price for their wide receiver might be a first-round pick, given his rookie year performance and the fact that they’re not actively shopping him right now. At the very worst, they wouldn’t trade him for less than a second-rounder after Harrison Jr. netted the Cardinals a second-round pick.

If the Chiefs can convince the Jaguars to take a third-round pick for BTJ, they’d make out like bandits. As it stands, though, a second-round pick sounds like the most reasonable offer the Chiefs can give to the Jaguars in this hypothetical.
