It’s game day once more in Detroit, though for most Red Wings fans yesterday’s news is probably still more on their minds than tonight’s matchup with the winless Philadelphia Flyers.
Following the official announcement of star winger Alex DeBrincat‘s contract extension yesterday morning, Detroit Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff met with the media to discuss the signing and answered several questions that still loom large for the franchise, including unsigned RFA defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
When asked about Edvinsson Horcoff told the media in no uncertain terms;
“I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson,” said Detroit Red Wings General Manager Shawn Horcoff. Horcoff says he plans to keep the defenseman in Detroit. Horcoff says he has talked to Edvinsson numerous times and is in “constant contact” with his agency. More from Horcoff… pic.twitter.com/p8cHzyMv9D

It’s the correct answer, and one that hopefully should help assuage the big swede’s discontent with the franchise after breaking norms and showing up without a contract to training camp and partaking in activities, only to leave Detroit without one.
The Red Wings have a little over a month and a half to sign Edvinsson before they essentially waste his season, as if he is without a contract on Dec. 1 with the Red Wings or otherwise, he will not be able to play the rest of the season. However, even getting Edvinsson to sign (at market value) before Nov. 1 would probably be seen as a big win for the Red Wings these days. For the moment however, the team is still looking to secure their second win on ice this season.
Hosting the winless Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit will be making a statement tonight one way or the other with the outcome.
Lose, and the boo birds will definitely be singing their song.
Win, and these near-dead Wings just might show they’ve got something to build off of.
