An NFL team that is 0-5 with a struggling quarterback is getting a lot of attention on the rumor mill.
That team, however, is not the Miami Dolphins. Although winless in their first five games and with quarterback Malik Willis near the bottom of almost all NFL passing categories, the Dolphins are not about to make any changes during their bye week.
No, we’re talking about the Los Angeles Chargers and QB Justin Herbert. While you can say most people are not stunned by the 0-5 Dolphins, the 0-5 Chargers have been one of the biggest disappointments the first two months of the NFL season.
And former Miami head coach Mike McDaniel, hired by Jim Harbaugh to be his offensive coordinator, is under fire for the Chargers’ anemic offense and Herbert’s awful passing numbers.

NFL/ESPN Insider Ian Rapoport said this week there could be changes coming although no one with the Chargers organization has said anything publicly. And here is another Dolphins twist – Rapoport said if McDaniel is given the boot, his replacement as interim offensive coordinator most likely would be Adam Gase. The man who was the Dolphins’ head coach from 2016-2018 is now the Chargers’ passing game coordinator.

Herbert currently is ranked 30th among NFL quarterbacks, one place ahead of Willis. Herbert has completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 937 yards with 5 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions. He also has fumbled six times.
The Chargers – who rank 30th in scoring offense and 30th in passing – have been plagued by offensive line injuries and lack a star receiver so the woes cannot all be put on McDaniel. Two weeks ago, after a loss to the Seahawks, Harbaugh defended McDaniel, indicating that his job was not in jeopardy. A likely loss at the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 18 could turn up the heat even more.
McDaniel addressed the situation two weeks ago, saying “Narratives in the first quarter of the season are generally about 40% right, good or bad.”
Stay tuned.
