While the Buffalo Bills pulled off a thrilling primetime victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football last week, it wasn’t without drama. It also came with a pretty candid warning from Bills head coach Joe Brady. After running back James Cook’s fumble set the Rams up for a potential game-winning field goal in overtime, which was missed, leading to a Bills walk-off kick, Brady discussed the star running back’s ball security.
In short, even after a win, Brady was honest that Cook could face consequences if the fumbling issues continue, including reduced carries.

However, after the dust had settled on Wednesday, Brady walked back those comments quite a bit. While speaking with the media, he made it clear that addressing ball security was vital, but he’s not going to stop giving Cook the ball.
“First off, I don’t want James running any more timid,” Brady said. “He is playing outstanding in terms of how he’s running the football right now. And I don’t know if anybody’s running the ball better than him in the NFL, but we’re putting the ball on the ground.
There’s a fine line in terms of I don’t want him feeling like he has to be scared of how he’s running, and now he’s not hitting the hole. But the ball security in traffic, the double in trouble, and then the intentionality behind it. And I think we have to do a better job also in the look teams in terms of making sure that we’re taking our shots in practice and making sure that we don’t lose any detail. But he’s aware of it. We’re going to continue coaching it. But I don’t want you guys to think that I’m going to stop giving James Cook the ball either.”
Obviously, Brady’s comments on Wednesday were quite different from what he said shortly after the victory over the Rams, and that’s understandable. Cook’s overtime fumble was nearly a game-changer, but in the grand scheme of things, Brady is right: he’s been one of the best running backs in football this season.
Don’t expect Cook’s workload to change much, if at all, after starting the year with 532 rushing yards, a 5.6 yards-per-carry average and five touchdowns.
