The Los Angeles Rams somehow made NFL history in one of the most improbable ways possible Monday night.

Despite an offensive performance that checked nearly every box necessary to win, the Rams fell to the Buffalo Bills 37-34 in overtime, producing a statistical combination that had never previously resulted in a loss.

Rams put together historic offensive performance

According to OptaSTATS, the Rams became the only team in NFL history to lose a game after recording all of the following:
-
400-plus total yards
-
30-plus first downs
-
Five-plus touchdowns
-
A 50% or better third-down conversion rate
-
Zero turnovers
Los Angeles finished with 454 total yards and 33 first downs while converting 7-of-14 third downs. Matthew Stafford was outstanding, completing 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. Puka Nacua also delivered a massive performance with 17 receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown.
The Rams’ offense even scored a touchdown with five seconds remaining in regulation, as Kyren Williams’ one-yard touchdown run tied the game at 34-34 and forced overtime.

Special teams ultimately decides the game

Despite the offensive production, the Rams could not finish the job in overtime.
After Los Angeles recovered a James Cook fumble, the Rams drove into Buffalo territory and faced fourth down at the Bills’ 30-yard line. Sean McVay elected to send Harrison Mevis out for a 48-yard field goal, but Greg Rousseau blocked the attempt. Buffalo then took advantage, with Josh Allen using his legs to move the Bills into scoring range before Tyler Bass drilled a 45-yard field goal to win the game.
McVay took responsibility afterward, saying he regretted not calling a better third-down play to potentially create a shorter fourth-down attempt.
The loss drops Los Angeles to 2-3, making the bizarre statistic even more painful. The Rams produced an offensive performance that had never before been associated with a loss—and still walked away from Monday Night Football without the win.
