LeBron James is not coming to Philadelphia to score 30 points a night. He is here to fix the offense and teach the young guys how to win. A veteran’s role is to lead rather than merely pad stats, a fact demonstrated by this $8 million, two-year deal featuring a player option.
The deal was confirmed by Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul, who spoke directly to ESPN’s Shams Charania about the terms. It is a smart move for a team that needs a floor general more than another shooter.
Mentoring the Next Generation
James has already started the work. He pulled rookie guard Labaron Philon aside after a recent scrimmage where the young player passed up a good shot. The veteran told Philon that he had to be himself and take the chance. “He told me that I had to be myself,” Philon told The Athletic. The lesson was clear. Philon admitted he had a floater that was available to him, and he didn’t take it. He needed to take it. This kind of direct coaching is exactly what the Sixers lacked last season.
James is looking to attack before the defense gets set. He explained that attacking early is a priority for the new lineup. “I think it’s always important just to be able to attack offensively before the defense is set,” James told reporters. This approach changes how the team plays. It forces opponents to react rather than dictate the pace. The Sixers have the talent to run, but they needed someone to pull the strings.

The Personal Cost of a Championship Run
There is a heavy price for this new chapter. Although his family remains away, James is committing to one last bid for an NBA title. His son Bronny plays for the Lakers while Bryce is in Arizona playing basketball. James hardly gets to see them during the season. Sporting News reports that he divides his time between New York and Philadelphia. The adjustment has been tough. Adjusting to life with the 76ers has proven difficult, James has acknowledged.
Despite the distance from home, the chemistry is building slowly. James noted that the group is still learning each other on the floor. “Obviously, this has been a small sample size for us, and we’re still trying to learn each other on the floor,” James said, according to reports.
Each day improves, though obviously some days will naturally surpass others. Being around these teammates at the facility definitely provides assistance. The family separation is real, but the focus on the job remains sharp.
The preseason numbers show he is not trying to dominate the ball. Against the Brooklyn Nets on October 8, James posted 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists in roughly 18 minutes of his preseason debut.
