The departures of Angelo Stiller and Kenan Yildiz appear to have fundamentally changed how Bayern Munich approaches the development and integration of young players. Jochen Sauer, who has held leading positions within Bayern Munich’s youth academy since 2017, explained to Spox that the two departures forced the club to take a closer look at the pathway between the academy and the professional team.
“Among other things, Angelo’s case ultimately led to new approaches for us regarding the issue of permeability between the youth teams and the professionals,” Sauer told Spox (as captured by Sport1). “When Kenan Yildiz moved to Juventus Turin a year after Angelo and established himself there among the professionals, it was further confirmation that a U-19 player from FC Bayern can very quickly succeed at a top international club.”
Stiller left Bayern for Hoffenheim on a free transfer in 2021 before moving to VfB Stuttgart and developing into a Germany international. Yildiz followed a year later, also leaving Bayern without a transfer fee before establishing himself at Juventus and becoming one of the most highly regarded young attackers in Europe.
“Stiller and Yildiz have certainly contributed to us focusing more on the transition,” Sauer continued. “There’s no point in investing heavily in training players if we then don’t benefit from it either in terms of sporting or financial results.”

Yildiz’s departure remains particularly telling because Bayern Munich believed it had several talented players in the same age group. Sauer explained why the club ultimately could not offer Yildiz the pathway he wanted.
“Back then, we had other very talented players in the same age group as him, such as Paul Wanner and Arijon Ibrahimović. The professional squad at the time didn’t allow three 17-year-old attacking players to train with the first team at the same time,” Sauer said. “Furthermore, the transfer of Mathys Tel had already been hinted at; he too was born in 2005. Juve promised Yildiz a permanent place in professional training, which we couldn’t offer at that time. Therefore, he made the right decision for himself.”
Bayern Munich does not want to find itself in that position again. Sauer pointed to FC Barcelona as an example of what the club would like to achieve.
“They have a high-level system of development without plummeting in the standings – quite the opposite, in fact,” Sauer stated.
Sauer believes that philosophy is now increasingly visible at Bayern, too.
“A different awareness has developed throughout the entire sporting area, and the professional department with coach Vincent Kompany has once again created a new dynamic,” Sauer said.
Kompany, in particular, has earned Sauer’s praise for his willingness to trust young players.
“Vincent is definitely close. It’s impressive how many talented players he gave the chance for their first appearances last season,” Sauer remarked.
Sauer also pointed to Kompany’s previous work with young players at Anderlecht, highlighting his role in the development of former Bayern prospect Joshua Zirkzee.
“He has already proven in Anderlecht that he can work with young players. He made a significant contribution to the excellent development of our loaned player Joshua Zirkzee,” noted Sauer.
Stiller and Yildiz may ultimately have become cautionary tales for Bayern Munich, but their departures appear to have produced a lasting change. The club now has a much greater incentive to ensure that the talent developed at the campus actually has a clear path toward the first team.
