Tilak Varma and Axar Patel’s mix-up hands West Indies a cheap wicket in Indore
Holkar Cricket Stadium is a ground where batting sides expect to push past 200. The four earlier T20Is here produced an average first-innings score of 200.25. With the series level at 1-1 and the West Indies choosing to field, India’s batters knew that every run would count, and they even started well.
Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan took them to 115/1 in 8.1 overs, and the innings looked set for a big total. What followed was not good bowling. Two run-outs, both from simple errors, ruined the innings. The first and the worst was Tilak’s. He had scored 28 runs off 16 balls, with four fours, at a strike rate of 175.

He was run out in a way that left the Indian fans stunned. The dismissal came off a Gudakesh Motie delivery, when Axar and Tilak both thought the ball had gone for four. While returning for the second run, they stopped to bump fists. West Indies appealed for a run-out, and they got one. The West Indies had been sharp, while India had been casual.
India fans react to the Tilak Varma and Axar Patel run-outs
Tilak Varma wasn’t the only casualty of casual running between the wickets, though. Axar was run out right after another poor decision, with Arshdeep Singh, a tail-ender, at the other end. Fans were quick to react.
One supporter said the pair had watched like clowns without attempting a run and compared the standard to the Pakistan cricket team, who have had a long share of such brain-fade moments.
“What c**p from TILAK and AXAR. Both watching like clowns and not attempting to run and even gave TILAK’s wicket in the process, they said and added, “Gully cricket level/Pakistan level IQ.”
Another fan said Tilak had been “run out in the weirdest way possible.”
Had it been a genuine effort, then it would have made sense. But Varma casually strolled through as if they weren’t playing under the pressure of scoring at a venue where high-scoring matches are common.

A third felt that such casual cricket should not be seen at this level.
“Very casual, this shouldn’t be happening at this level. Tilak Varma getting run out for nothing will cost India at least 30 runs,” they wrote.

The Windies have already proven how they could punish the Indians in the chase of 250 in the second T20I. Every run could become crucial while defending a total.
With that in mind, Varma’s dismissal can’t just be called unlucky.
One user simply said, “That’s pretty lazy, you know.” Varma and Axar should have understood the situation. A target of 223, while large for the stadium’s standards, is nowhere close to what the Windies had chased just two days ago.
That’s pretty lazy, you know.

Another was in disbelief after the run-out, terming the dismissal as “horrible”.
“What was that? Didn’t run anything and Tilak got run out. Horrible,” they wrote.

Overall, it also paints the picture that the Indian T20 side have been a bit overconfident in their abilities.

Why the Indore run-outs matter for India
Run-outs from poor communication hurt more than good deliveries because the bowling side does little to earn them. Tilak was scoring at a strike rate of 175 and had settled in. Losing a fast-scoring batter with overs still left costs more than the runs he had on the board.
The second run-out made the damage worse. With Arshdeep, a tail-ender, at the other end, India had little room to recover after losing both batters in quick time. On a ground that rewards big totals, the pair’s mistakes could prove costly if the West Indies chase well.
