When the Buffalo Bills were making changes this offseason, obviously the head coach was a big talking point. Yet, another big point of contention was the team’s wide receiver corps, which featured no clear-cut No. 1 receiver for Josh Allen to consistently pepper with targets. The Bills struck early, trading a second-round pick for D.J. Moore, but apparently they had a chance at reeling in an even bigger fish via free agency.

While the Bills, who enter Week 6 with a 4-1 record and the No. 1 scoring offense, can’t have much to complain about, there’s always room for improvement. Yet, the team may be pleased with their results thus far, with tight end Dalton Kincaid, plus receivers Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, all having over 200 receiving yards in five games. Moore isn’t far behind with 178.
Yet, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Bills may have also had a chance at signing prized free agent and potential future Hall of Famer Mike Evans.
“Despite an aggressive push from Tampa Bay to re-sign Evans, the future Hall of Famer was looking for two things this offseason: the best chance to win a Super Bowl, and to get targets. Evans, 33, knew his game had held up and he could remain a primary option in an offense. The Buffalo Bills were high on Evans’ list, too, but they traded for DJ Moore before free agency (it’s worth noting that many teams believed Evans would return to Tampa Bay, and perhaps Buffalo was one). “
Jeremy Fowler on Mike Evans/Buffalo Bills
The six-time Pro Bowl receiver recorded a 1,000-yard season in the first 11 seasons of his career before a torn ACL ended his season after just eight games in 2025. Yet, the 13th-year-pro looks fully healthy again in San Francisco and is coming off an excellent 113-yard, one touchdown performance in a key Week 5 win. It’s hard not to think about the type of impact Evans could have had in Buffalo too.
