In the NFL, star wide receivers are often judged solely by target shares, box score statistics, and receiving yardage. But following Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward pointed out an effort away from the football that truly defined the team’s offensive success.
Heyward highlighted Jaylen Warren’s explosive 80-yard play on his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward.” The seven-time Pro Bowler made sure wide receiver DK Metcalf received praise for springing the tailback into the end zone with his relentless downfield blocking. Rather than spectator behavior after the catch, Metcalf delivered two consecutive blocks down the sideline to pave Warren’s path.
“This is like one of those plays in youth football where you say doesn’t matter if you have the ball in your hands, and DK does a great job of not just getting one but two blocks,” Heyward explained. “And that’s the reason why it goes for 80 yards. I love that play.”
Co-host Hayden Walsh noted that fans can occasionally be critical of high-profile receivers, but selfless plays like this demonstrate true commitment to team chemistry. Heyward echoed that sentiment, emphasizing how rare and valuable that extra effort is at the professional level.
“For DK to finish his blocks and it turned into a touchdown, I think any youth player can learn from that,” Heyward said.
This feels especially valuable in the Steel City, where previous top receivers have been seen giving up on plays or refusing to block.
As Pittsburgh’s offense continues to show big-play growth, Metcalf’s willingness to throw blocks downfield highlights a culture shift. While Warren finished the splash play, Heyward’s analysis proves that Metcalf’s hustle made the touchdown possible.
