Texas and Oklahoma will play for the 122nd time today. Oklahoma wasn’t even a state yet when the Red River Rivalry started. The Cotton Bowl stadium in Fair Park in Dallas has been the home since 1932 and the game is held on the second Saturday in October, making it the centerpiece of the two weeks long State Fair of Texas.

Texas leads the series 65–51–5 (.558). Since the AP Poll was invented, at least one of the two teams has been ranked 70 times. Texas and OU have won a combined 11 national championships. The loser of this game has never gone on to win the national title.

Dallas is roughly halfway between Austin and Norman and serves as a “neutral” site. The designated “home” team alternates from year to year. Oklahoma is “home” in even-numbered years and Texas in odd-numbered years. The Horns will wear their Icy White uniforms today.

Each team gets 50% of the seats in the stadium, with the border between the fans running down the 50 yardline. Red River is the only neutral site game that has this seating configuration. The Oklahoma fans occupy the south end zone, which contains the sole tunnel that both teams use to enter and exit the field.

The teams have a contract in place with the City of Dallas to hold the game at Fair Park until at least 2036.

Texas vs. Oklahoma prediction

The big question is, will Manning and the Texas offense improve this week against a stout Oklahoma defense? The off week should have helped. But the UT offensive line worries me. OU has a much better defense than Tennessee had, and the Vols defense contained the Longhorns pretty well.

Mateer’s trajectory started on a downward spiral in this game last year. He hasn’t been the same since and has been a turnover machine. But offense isn’t the only way to score. The Sooners might score on defense or special teams.

I think Texas wins, but it will be an ugly slugfest.

Final Score: Texas 20, Oklahoma 17
