Can we count on the wonkiness of recent Red River games to produce another odd rivalry result?
Over the past 13 matchups, the team ranked lower in the AP Top 25 has won six times. Last year, it was an unranked Texas squad knocking off No. 6 Oklahoma 23-6 in John Mateer’s first game back from a thumb injury.
Before that thumb injury, Mateer was the early-season Heisman favorite. He’s still looking to recapture that form.
The Sooners’ offense is in a funk. OU has scored 14 or fewer points in each of its last three games. Part of those struggles have been due to a banged-up offensive line that has struggled and Texas had 10 sacks in its last game against Tennessee.
The Longhorns will be wanting to unlock a run game that added Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers ahead of the 2026 season. The two transfers have split time through the first four games, but Texas rushed 41 times for 141 yards against Ohio State and 36 times for just 61 yards in that win over Tennessee.
