Joe Cole says Arsenal’s remarkable squad depth was helpful as they beat Leeds in a match they could have lost and did not play at their best. Leeds headed to London as one of the most in-form teams in the league, and a lot of their players had the chance to rest during the international window, so they were fresh.
However, as champions, Arsenal is always expected to perform, and the Gunners knew they had to respond to their loss to Brighton just before the break. They tried their best to make that happen and eventually managed to overturn Leeds’ opening goal to secure an important win in the fixture, which made them remind everyone why they are champions.
Cole’s Praise for Arsenal’s Depth
It was not an easy game, and Mikel Arteta had to be tactically spot-on to get a win, especially after his team went behind and they responded well to get back to win. One luxury Arsenal has over some of their rivals is depth, and Cole says it helped them to find a way to break down a very stubborn Leeds team. He said via the BBC:
“Leeds look like they’ve ran out of ideas. It’s what champions do and Arsenal have got the squad depth. They’ve got the quality and they all work hard for each other.”

A statement of intent
The win is a statement of intent, showing Arsenal can grind out results even when not at their best. The character and unity within the squad will please the fans, and the momentum from this victory could be crucial in the weeks ahead. Arteta’s side will look to build on this as they chase their ambitions.
Leeds will take heart from their performance, even in defeat, as they showed they can compete with the best. Their unbeaten run may have ended, but the display suggests they are genuine contenders for European places. Farke’s side will look to bounce back quickly.
