It was a very ugly start to the season for quarterback Drake Maye, and the team needed to fix it as soon as possible.
Maye wasn’t perfect against the Buffalo Bills in the Patriots‘ must-win Week 4 game against their division rival, but he was much better, going 22 of 37 for 269 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
This was by far Maye’s best game of the season and looked similar to what he did a season ago, when many considered him one of the better young quarterbacks in football.
The promising sign is that it seemed to raise Maye’s confidence a bit.
Over the past couple of weeks, the young man didn’t seem to have the typical confidence we’re used to seeing. That was a problem in itself, though his recent comments suggest that things are changing and will only improve.
“I think we’re just kind of starting up the mountain,” Maye said Wednesday, per the Boston Herald. “I think you’d like to think that and we’ve got to go prove that. But it’s a race for us to improve and knowing that you’ve got to improve throughout the season and throughout the year for these teams. And these teams, once you get closer to the end that are are going to kind of be at their best at the end, and I think that’s one of the things that you strive to do throughout the year.
“And knowing that — you like to say everybody, especially on offense — you like to say that obviously the first three weeks wasn’t what we wanted to put out there, and you’ve got to try to build off last week, and knowing that it’s not just going to do it for you. You’ve got to put the work in and the focus, and hopefully continue to catch a trend and catch a stride.”
Maye isn’t someone who beats around the bush, as he never came out over the past couple of weeks and said he was playing the type of football he needed to.
He understood that he was playing at a very below-average level, and that’s great to see from a franchise quarterback. I’m very curious to see if he can maintain this momentum, though I am very optimistic he can.
