The ALDS continues Thursday night, as the Chicago White Sox host the Cleveland Guardians in Game 4 at Rate Field, with first pitch set for 8 p.m. ET. The White Sox enter this matchup with a 2-1 series lead and are one win away from their first trip to the American League Championship Series since 2005.

Chicago outscored Cleveland 7-3 in the first two games of the series but was unable to clinch its trip to the ALCS on Wednesday night. Cleveland found its spark on offense with a bases-clearing triple from Jo Adell in the third inning and a two-run triple from José Ramírez in the eighth, en route to a series-extending 9-3 victory.

The Guardians will start left-hander Parker Messick (12-9, 2.56 ERA) in Game 4, making his second start of the series after taking the loss in Game 1. He gave up four hits and two earned runs, both on a two-run homer from Munetaka Murakami, over 4 1/3 innings, striking out six.

Left-hander Hagen Smith (3-3, 1.29 ERA) will open for the White Sox, also having started Game 1 of this series, throwing 2 2/3 hitless innings while striking out four and walking three batters.

Don’t be surprised if Gavin Williams shows up

A small surprise from pregame interviews: Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams is available out of the bullpen, according to manager Stephen Vogt. The right-hander threw 92 pitches in five innings in Game 2 on Monday and is seen as Cleveland’s likely starter for Game 5, if they force it.

Vogt: “Gavin is available out of the bullpen, yeah. We don’t know if or when or how, but he is available, obviously. We’re all hands on deck at this point.”
