President Donald Trump dismissed catastrophic predictions regarding artificial intelligence Sunday, insisting that the United States must aggressively advance the technology to maintain global leadership.
Speaking to reporters at his Doonbeg golf resort in Ireland, Trump minimized apocalyptic warnings as improbable occurrences that should not hinder national technological momentum.
Highlighting global competition in key emerging sectors, Trump stated, “We’re leading China in AI”.
Emphasizing the vital importance of economic and national security dominance, Trump said, “whoever wins AI wins”.
Acknowledging potential federal safety oversight while remaining cautious of overregulation, Trump noted, “we can put guardrails; we can do this and that”.
Dismissing vocal industry critics, Trump added that negative voices are raising issues that will not materialize.
The president’s comments followed safety researchers quitting Anthropic after issuing warnings about rapid artificial intelligence development.
Former researcher Jacob Coxon warned that leading developers are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives”.
Following public outcry, corporate leaders including Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei advocated slowing frontier developments to prevent severe internet security risks.
House Speaker Mike Johnson called for legislative balance, stating, “we cannot put a moratorium on this because China will overlap us”.
