Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., dismissed the intense scrutiny surrounding far-left online streamer Hasan Piker as a mere diversion during a Sunday television appearance.
The discussion intensified after the host of NBC’s “Meet the Press” asked Raskin about Democratic divisions over Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s relationship with the streamer.
The host played a clip of the controversial internet personality sharing his extreme foreign policy stance.
In the broadcast footage, Piker detailed his perspective on the Middle East conflict.
“I’ve also said I’m a harm reduction voter. I’m a lesser evil voter, and therefore I would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time,” Piker declared.
When asked if such rhetoric had a place in the Democratic Party, Raskin downplayed the significance of the streamer’s controversial comments.
“I think all of that is an irrelevant distraction,” Raskin argued.
He then firmly emphasized the party’s stance against terrorism.
“Obviously, nobody supports Hamas, a terrorist organization which brutally attacked Israel on Oct. 7,” Raskin added.
The controversy continues to fuel criticism from political opponents as the November midterm elections approach.
RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre warned of a socialist influence on the ballot.
“The Democrat Party is being driven off a cliff by socialists who are driving blindfolded while arguing about the view,” Baldassarre said.
Meanwhile, El-Sayed defended his decision to engage Piker’s massive audience of 3 million listeners.
“I want to offer them a pathway into an electoral movement,” El-Sayed explained.
