The completion of the National Football League preseason has turned attention toward how first-round draft selections are preparing for their opening games.
Several rookies received significant play time, while others were held out due to injuries or strategic decisions.
Among the notable quarterbacks, Fernando Mendoza played 85 snaps for the Raiders and faced pressure on 19 of 51 dropbacks.
An evaluation of his footwork suggests that “He brings his eyes down when pressure is at his feet, which eliminates any possibility of completing a pass late in the down,” reported CBS Sports.
Kirk Cousins has been announced as the starting quarterback for the team in Week 1, allowing Mendoza time to adjust.
Meanwhile, running back Jeremiyah Love performed well for the Cardinals but suffered an ankle injury during his limited playing time.
Regarding his recovery and future availability, the rookie “should be available for Week 1,” according to CBS Sports.
On the defensive side, edge rusher David Bailey showed consistent motivation and generated pressure on stunts during his 20 snaps.
For offensive tackle Blake Miller, struggles became apparent when “he dipped his head, allowed defenders to get their hands into his body or short-set in pass protection,” reported CBS Sports.
Other rookies, such as wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and tight end Kenyon Sadiq, did not play during the preseason because of their respective injuries.
With the regular season quickly approaching, coaching staffs are analyzing these performances to finalize their Week 1 rosters.
