A 51-year-old man believed to be homeless died Monday morning after jumping from a ledge inside the University of Florida football stadium.
The incident occurred at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville just days before the school’s season home-opening game.
University of Florida police officers responded to reports of a man standing on a concrete beam in the west concourse at approximately 9:50 a.m.
Describing the tense standoff, officials explained that authorities arrived on the scene and initiated talks with the individual.
“Police tried to negotiate with him to get down safely,” the New York Post and CBS Sports reported.
The negotiation attempts ultimately failed when the man stepped off the beam and fell between 60 and 80 feet to the ground.
Describing the final moments of the fall, emergency responders noted the exact location where the victim landed.
“The man fell, landing on the concourse near the stadium’s Gate 4.”
First responders quickly performed life-saving measures on the man, who was initially reported to be conscious and breathing.
Despite these efforts, the Alachua County Fire Rescue pronounced the victim dead at 10:05 a.m.
Expressing their initial findings, investigators clarified the connection between the deceased individual and the campus.
“The man was not connected to the university and was believed to have likely been homeless.”
Campus officials stated that no one else was inside the stadium at the time and confirmed that the event was an isolated incident.
The tragic plunge occurred less than a year after 19-year-old Ohio State student William Meyers jumped to his death inside Ohio Stadium.
The Gators are still scheduled to kick off their 2026 college football season on Saturday night against Florida Atlantic.
