LOS ANGELES – Nick Reiner, 32, the son of Hollywood actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of killing his parents, who were found dead in their Brentwood home over the weekend, Los Angeles police said Monday.
Nick Reiner, who struggled with substance abuse, was taken into custody Sunday night and booked for murder at the county jail, where he remains without bail, according to a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) statement. Homicide detectives are scheduled to present their case to the county district attorney’s office on Tuesday for potential formal charges.
Rob Reiner, 78, known for directing films such as When Harry Met Sally… and The Princess Bride, and his wife Michele, 70, were discovered slain Sunday afternoon. The LAPD said its investigation determined that the Reiners were victims of homicide and that their son was responsible for their deaths.
Local media reported that the couple’s daughter was the first to find them. Nick Reiner had publicly discussed his battles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness, entering rehab for the first time at age 15 and undergoing at least 17 treatment stays over the years. His experiences inspired the film Being Charlie, co-written with his father.
According to reports, Nick Reiner was seen arguing with his parents at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien the night before the killings. Months earlier, the family had attended the Los Angeles premiere of Rob Reiner’s film Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, where Nick appeared serious and unsmiling in photographs.
Tributes have poured in for Rob Reiner, who was also known for his activism and support of liberal causes. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said he “improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.” As an actor, Reiner gained fame as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the 1970s sitcom All in the Family and won two Emmy Awards for his role. He directed nearly two dozen films, including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Misery, and A Few Good Men.
Michele Reiner, a former photographer, once captured the image of Donald Trump for his book Trump: The Art of the Deal. Rob Reiner, the son of late comedy writer and actor Carl Reiner, was active in political campaigns, producing ads for John Kerry in 2004 and campaigning against a 2008 California same-sex marriage ban.
