NBA superstar Kevin Durant has signed a two-year contract extension worth $90 million with the Houston Rockets. The deal cements Durant’s place as the league’s all-time highest earner, with total career earnings projected to reach $598.2 million — surpassing LeBron James’s $583.9 million.

The 37-year-old American forward, a two-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors and the 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player, joined the Rockets in July after being traded from the Phoenix Suns in a record-breaking seven-team deal — the largest in NBA history.

Durant’s agent, Rich Kleiman, told ESPN that while the veteran forward was eligible for a maximum $120 million extension, he accepted a reduced amount to allow Houston greater financial flexibility in building a title-contending roster. With $54.7 million in salary for the upcoming season, Durant will earn $144.7 million over the next three years under the new arrangement.

Last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game — his 17th in the league — despite missing time due to an ankle injury. The Suns struggled in his absence, losing six of their last seven games and ultimately missing the playoffs.

A 15-time NBA All-Star, Durant has also been instrumental on the international stage, helping the United States capture four Olympic gold medals.

Houston, under coach Ime Udoka, has been active in the offseason — re-signing key staff and securing deals with guard Fred VanVleet (currently sidelined with a knee injury), New Zealand center Steven Adams, and free agents Clint Capela and Dorian Finney-Smith. The Rockets’ roster also features rising Turkish All-Star center Alperen Sengun.

The Rockets will begin their new campaign on Tuesday, opening the NBA season against defending champions Oklahoma City.
