Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom has indicated that he is seriously considering a run for the U.S. presidency in 2028, saying he will make a decision after the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking on CBS News’ Sunday Morning, Newsom remarked, “Yeah, I’d be lying (if I said) otherwise,” when asked about a potential White House bid. He added, “I’m looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment.”

This year, Newsom has taken steps to gauge support for a presidential run, elevating his profile within the Democratic Party through his outspoken criticism of Republican President Donald Trump on various issues. Under the U.S. Constitution, Trump is barred from seeking a third term, though he has suggested there may be ways around the restriction.

Newsom has also positioned California as a key player in Democratic efforts to reshape congressional maps, aiming to counterbalance similar initiatives by Republican-led states. These efforts come amid both parties’ struggle to control the U.S. House of Representatives, where Republicans currently hold a slim majority ahead of the 2026 elections.

With his growing national prominence and active engagement in high-profile political battles, Newsom appears to be emerging as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.
