DALLAS, Texas (Next Stamina) — A suspect is in custody after crashing into an occupied patrol unit on Loop 12 early Thursday, marking the third major incident involving injured Dallas law enforcement this week.
The state of play: The collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Loop 12 at Singleton Boulevard. Dallas Police Department officials report that two officers were inside their parked patrol unit assisting at a separate crash site when they were struck.
- Medical update: One officer was transported by Dallas Fire-Rescue, while the second was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle; both have since been treated and released.
- Suspect status: One individual was arrested at the scene; however, authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or specific charges, WFAA reported.
- Scene clearance: The affected stretch of Loop 12 remained closed for three hours during the investigation, eventually reopening to traffic at 5:30 a.m.
Additional Context: Dallas authorities are managing a surge in officer-involved collisions following two separate Monday crashes:
- Stemmons Hit-and-Run: On Monday at 12:46 a.m., a motorcycle officer was hit from behind in the 2900 block of North Stemmons Freeway and thrown from his bike. The suspect vehicle, a white Cadillac SUV, fled the scene.
- Recruit Hospitalized: Earlier Monday, 19-year-old Samantha Bonilla was arrested for DWI after allegedly swerving into an off-duty police recruit’s motorcycle on West Kiest Boulevard.
- Chief’s Response: Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux noted that the injuries were not life-threatening but emphasized that “routine calls can turn dangerous” instantly.
The bottom line: While all four members of the department involved in this week’s crashes are expected to recover, police continue to hunt for the driver of the white Cadillac involved in the Stemmons Freeway hit-and-run.
What’s next: Police are expected to release the suspect’s name and formal charges as the investigation into the Thursday morning collision progresses.
