After previously leaving open the possibility of retirement, Gray has decided that he wants to continue pitching in 2027.

Gray and his family have discussed his future, and the veteran right-hander ultimately decided he is not ready to walk away from baseball. Gray told Alex Speier of The Boston Globe that the decision was an easy one and that he still wants to win a World Series.
The decision comes after Gray had openly considered retirement following the Red Sox’s postseason elimination by the New York Yankees. Immediately after the loss, Gray was noncommittal about whether he would return for another season, despite saying he believed he still had plenty of baseball left in him.
That uncertainty now appears to be over.
Red Sox could still bring Gray back

Gray’s decision to continue pitching is significant for Boston because he was arguably the team’s best starting pitcher during the 2026 season. After joining the Red Sox in an offseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, Gray went 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA over 29 starts, setting career bests in both wins and full-season ERA.
Whether Gray returns to Boston remains undecided. He is expected to become a free agent after the mutual option in his contract is declined, but Gray made it clear that returning to the Red Sox is still an option.
For Boston, that could make an offseason reunion particularly appealing. Gray proved he still has plenty left in the tank, and his decision to continue pitching means the Red Sox will at least have an opportunity to keep the veteran starter in their rotation for 2027.
