MOSCOW — Russian air defense systems have faced continuous drone attacks from Ukraine over the past week, prompting damage in some regions and temporary disruptions to air travel.

On Dec. 16, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported via Telegram that a drone flying toward Moscow was destroyed, and emergency services were working at the site where debris fell. Earlier, on Dec. 12, Sobyanin reported that eight drones had been shot down while approaching Moscow.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defenses intercepted 235 Ukrainian drones overnight on Dec. 14. Earlier attacks included 121 drones destroyed on Dec. 9, 90 drones on Dec. 12, and 67 drones on Dec. 8.

Some strikes caused local damage. On Dec. 14, debris from a downed drone ignited an oil depot in Uryupinsk, Volgograd region, regional authorities said. In Tver, northwest of Moscow, seven people were injured on Dec. 12 amid drone-related incidents.

The attacks also disrupted air travel. At least ten Russian airports, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg, imposed temporary flight restrictions overnight on Dec. 14 and Dec. 12, the Russian aviation regulator reported. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport suspended departures during the attacks.

The sustained drone pressure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Russian air defenses as they work to protect key urban and industrial centers.
