As the New York Giants prepare for Sunday’s Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy expressed confidence in quarterback JJ McCarthy‘s progress in learning the team’s offensive system.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Nagy gave McCarthy an A-plus for his progress since arriving in New York.

“I would say it’s an A-plus,” said Nagy. “He’s doing really well. That’s as best as I can put it.”

The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings quarterback in a trade on September 28, but he has not appeared in a game for his new team.

Nagy explained that McCarthy has made considerable strides over the past seven days, crediting both the coaching staff’s work and the quarterback’s commitment to understanding the playbook. Quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and offensive quality control coach Mike Snyder have been helping McCarthy and fellow quarterback Jake Haener prepare for their potential roles.

Still, Nagy stressed that McCarthy’s development remains a work in progress. New York’s coaching staff is identifying plays that suit his strengths and considering how to incorporate them into the offense. However, McCarthy and Haener must also understand the complete game plan, making preparation more complicated than simply designing a specialized package.

The Giants had a set of plays prepared for McCarthy during their previous game, but the coaching staff ultimately did not use them. Nagy has not set a timetable for expanding McCarthy’s responsibilities or determining whether he will move ahead of Haener on the depth chart.

Head coach John Harbaugh indicated on Monday that McCarthy could be promoted to the backup quarterback position for Sunday’s contest. Such a move would place him behind starter Jameis Winston, although the team has not confirmed a change.

Meanwhile, Haener continues preparing alongside McCarthy in case the team’s quarterback situation changes. Nagy’s latest comments suggest that McCarthy is progressing through the transition, but his potential promotion will depend on the coaching staff’s assessment of his readiness.
