Jermall Charlo’s run of inactivity is only going to get longer.
The boxer, who grew up in Alief and lives in Sugar Land, had to pull out of his fight next weekend against Koen Mazoudier after suffering an injury during training. This is the second time in three months the Charlo-Mazoudier fight has been scrapped with it getting wiped out in July when Charlo couldn’t get a visa to travel to Australia for the event.
Mazoudier will stay on the Oct. 17 card and fight former super middleweight champion Armando Reséndiz as part of the undercard for the super welterweight title fight between champion Sebastian Fundora and Ermal Hadribeaj in Las Vegas. The tripleheader, which also includes Weslaco’s Brandon Figueroa defending his featherweight title against Tomoki Kameda, will be televised by TNT.
This is the latest in a frustrating run for the still undefeated Charlo, who was one of the best boxers in the world, winning the junior middleweight title in 2015, then successfully defending it three times before moving up to middleweight and winning that title as well. He won five straight title defenses at middleweight, but after beating Juan Macias Montiel in front of a raucous hometown crowd at Toyota Center in June 2021, Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) faced several hurdles outside the ring, including a bout with depression.
The 36-year-old has fought just two times since that night, beating José Benavidez Jr., in November 2023, then returning after an 18-month layoff to stop Thomas Lamanna in 2025.
Charlo had talked about using Mazoudier (16-4-1, 6 KOs) as a building block to bigger fights, including claiming a title at a third different weight class by going after the champions at super middleweight before calling it a career.
Now, Reséndiz (16-3, 11 KOs) will step in and use the night to revitalize his career after losing his super middleweight belt to Jaime Munguia in May.
“I’m hungry for a world title shot and I know I have to earn it,” Reséndiz said. “Fighting in Las Vegas on TNT and DAZN means a lot to me and my family. Mazoudier is coming to win and my back is against the wall, so I’ve been pushing myself every day in camp. I want to make everyone who’s stood by me proud. I’m going to let my hands go and give everything I have. The fans can count on that.”
