The Green Bay Packers have struggled to generate anything consistently on the ground through the opening weeks of the 2026 season, sitting at the bottom of the league with an average of just 58 rushing yards per game. That weakness could push the team to search for more help at running back, particularly with Josh Jacobs’ status remaining unclear.
Until Green Bay has a better idea of when Jacobs could return, adding another option to the backfield may become increasingly important.
Could Jamaal Williams rejoin the Green Bay Packers

NFL insider Jordan Schultz added another interesting development Wednesday, reporting that former Green Bay Packers running back is in the “best shape of his life.” Schultz also noted that Williams currently weighs 220 pounds, making him the lightest he has been since entering the NFL.

Schultz also reported that the New England Patriots brought Williams in for a workout Tuesday, but the team did not immediately offer him a contract. The NFL insider nevertheless expects the veteran running back to find a new team “sooner rather than later.”

Bringing back Williams could give the Green Bay Packers a proven veteran presence in a running back room that has struggled to produce this season. Williams previously formed one half of Green Bay’s productive backfield tandem with Aaron Jones Sr. from 2017 through 2020. There has been little from NFL insiders to suggest that a reunion is currently being considered, although some fans online have floated the idea of Williams returning to Green Bay.
